Some more thoughts on veganism, this time turning to a few questions...

A common question:
Where do you get your protein?
Beans, nuts, whole grains, soy products like tempeh and tofu, and a bit here and there in veggies.
"Plant proteins alone can provide enough of the essential and non-essential amino acids, as long as sources of dietary protein are varied and caloric intake is high enough to meet energy needs." - American Heart Association

A less common question:
Where do you get your diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease?
I don't!

Don't forget about obesity and cancer as well.

Note: I am aware that, as with any diet, it needs to be done intelligently for it to be nutritionally beneficial -- not all vegans are super healthy. My point is that you don't need a ton of milk and flesh to be healthy and happy.

Well Maeve and I wanted to get out of the city yesterday so we just started driving north until we decided we would go to the beach and get off the interstate in a town I was vaguely familiar with. I told her about how there used to be a big abandoned mental hospital there that was demolished a few years ago. I told her there used to be patient graveyards, and I wonder if they are still intact, though it would be almost impossible for me to remember where they were since it had been about five years since I went to that place.
Just as I finished telling her all that, I noticed an area that looked familiar. We drove further into a complex of buildings to investigate, and I was beginning to think that this was the spot where I had parked and gone through the woods to the old hospital campus years ago when the buildings were still there. So Maeve and I parked, climbed up a little hill, through woods, to a vast desolate area. There was a huge mound of earth with a tractor on top, a big shallow pond below, a field of reeds, huge chunks of stone, and a few piles of broken painted wood. When we got to the top of the big mound and looked around -- we could see the horizon in all directions and the boston skyline in the distance -- I told her it was extremely unlikely that this was not where the hospital used to be. We sat down in long wavy grass under the bright sun in tshirts, drank maple soda, drew pictures, listened to cars go by in the distance over and over.

When I got home I looked up the old mental hospital campus and found that it is now fancy apartment buildings. I have no idea where Maeve and I were yesterday.

there is this wooded area in my hometown where I like to go every now and then. I always go alone, barefoot, and it is a real calm retreat for me. I rarely see anyone else there, and it always feels kind of like the place is part of my subconscious, apart from reality. this time I went out to the clearing on the hill, where the autumn olive berries grow. as I was picking them, I heard a little crunch-crunch behind me... turned around and saw a military man walking up the hill in my direction. head-to-toe in fatigues, holding a big gun with both hands. and I stood and stared as he walked up the hill, veered to my right, and disappeared into the woods.

lunch today!

I went on a wild city foraging tour in boston the other day and got a whole buncha chicken-of-the-woods which is absolutely incredible, let me tell you. It is delicious. And it is not a chicken, it is a mushroom. so great.

So I stir-fried some of that with purple carrots from the farmer's market in olive oil and I think I put some salt in, and nothing else. Also had some [local] kale with two other kinds of wild greens whose names I can't remember, sauteed in [local] garlic and olive oil with berbere and dukkah, and salt.

It is very good, and very local except for the fact that I think I'm gonna eat the leftovers with vegannaise. Not local but it is so delicccioususs.ss

HUGE OKRA! from the Lawrence, Mass farmers market. so pretty. by far the largest okra I've ever seen. so I roasted it in the oven with some olive oil, red pepper flakes, and salt, the way I've done a hundred times with okra.

unfortunately it came out super tough and I was only able to eat the seeds inside, which were so big they were like corn kernels. oh well.

been really into sandwiches this summer! so I thought I would share my sandwich ideas with you:

GUACAMOLE SANDWICH
- avocados
- red onions, chopped
- cilantro, chopped
- garlic, minced
- dried chipotle pepper, ground (I used a coffee grinder)
- lime juice
Mash all that up together, spread it on some bread, then add sliced tomato and some kale or lettuce and maybe some more cilantro!

SALAD SANDWICH
somewhat similar to a vietnamese bánh mì sandwich
- carrots, shredded
- radishes, shredded
- red onions, thinly sliced
- rice vinegar
- agave nectar
- toasted sesame oil
1) Combine the above and let sit for at least an hour.
2) Spread a generous amount of vegennaise and some sriracha sauce on your bread.
3) Pile on a nice slab of fresh tofu, slices of avocado and cucumbers, your carrot mix, and a few sprigs of cilantro.

If you happen to be in the Boston area, I highly recommend buying the following local items like I did:
- 21st Century tofu from Jamaica Plain (at City Feed and Harvest)
- Iggy's Bread from Cambridge
- carrots, onions, garlic, cucumbers, and kale from the farmers markets.
Everything is so much fresher and more incredible when it's local, and fresh produce is pretty bleak here in the winter so eat up now while you still can!!!

I fell on my bike the other day and got some big pretty bruises. They are the best works of art I've produced in over a month. So I tried to document them, but didn't do such a great job. Ironically, I am terrible at photographing skin (if it is my own).

Closeups, Identity, Objectification

Some people have asked me whether I think that closeups are objectifying or something, because they obscure and fragment identity. This threw me off a bit, because I didn't feel like I was objectifying. I felt like I was appreciating people in an even deeper way than most photographers. It is an intimate relationship.

I argue that closeups don't obscure identity any more than any other method of depiction. There is always a frame, always a cropping of reality. And this kind of cropping, the extreme closeup, is just appealing to me. As for the nudity, I don't care for clothes that much. Who cares about clothes when you've got this endless jungle of hairs and curves and pores and crevices and stuff?

Showing someone naked and without their face doesn't automatically objectify them. It's not that simple. You can show profound appreciation for a living being in this way, and not be objectifying. Conversely, you could easily photograph someone in full dress from head to toe and still objectify them, for sure.

So whatever.

There is a lab in boston that is filled with junk. Just piles of wires and old Apple circuit boards and vcr's that don't work and other broken pieces of plastic that no one cares about. This is where the microscope is, in the corner. No one ever goes to this lab really. So I went in and set up my stuff, expecting a nice intimate evening to myself, to extract fluids from my body and put them onto little glass slides and videotape them in the privacy of this secret spot. But: someone else showed up this time. It was just when I'd started shooting that the doorbell rang. So I had this other person in there with me, doing her own thing... really weird. She was talking to me, and underneath the table I was slicing the skin of my calf with a razor blade and dabbing it with my little shard of glass. I wonder if she noticed.

Eric M. Hunt, 22, of Mission Hill, died at Brigham & Women’s Hospital after being struck at about 6 p.m. at the intersection of Huntington and South Huntington in Boston MA.

Fellow cyclists are planning to put up a ghost bike at the intersection later today and are asking people to show their support at 11pm tonight.
Some of us will bring candles and flowers. You dont need to bring anything if you dont want, just your support for a fellow cyclist.

My personal artist statement for the gallery show:

The photographic camera and the watchful public eye have subjected the female body to their gaze countless times. I have certainly felt my own body exposed to many. Often, that gaze is unwanted, even violating, and it taints the way I am perceived.

I use my work to reclaim my body. I reclaim the use of the camera, and reappropriate the female in the most aggressive and honest way I can, in the way that I see fit. I flood the frame with flesh, till it oozes with obscene color. All parts of the body – the worshipped, the ignored, the mundane, and the loathed – are enlarged considerably on my prints, confronting the viewer. They are me, they are female, and they are at once beautiful, repulsive, and erotic.

Sweet Summer Escapist Sorbet

Let's pretend it's summer! Here in Boston it may be like a snow globe, but not in my brain. It is good n sunny up there.

1 lb hulled fresh strawberries
1 lb watermelon
zest of 1 lemon (or lime)
1 Tb lemon (or lime) juice
~1 Tb agave nectar

add everything but the agave into a blender and blend till smoothish and uniform. add agave to taste.
throw it in an ice cream maker and follow the machine's instructions. if you don't have one, maybe you could just throw it in the freezer or something... dunno.

Maybe afterward you would like to try a little somethin like this??

...that's weird though. pretty weird.
